| Question 4 : What is the term volume weight used by the airlines? How is it calculated?
|
| Answer : The term “Volume weight” is used by the airlines for cargo, which is light in weight but occupies a lot of space. In such cases, the airlines loses money if it charges according to the gross weight only.
So, they have come up with a term “volume weight” , which is calculated as
(Length X breadth X height ) / 6000 ; the scale being centimeters.
If volume-weight is greater than the gross weight , them the charges are made on the former.
Example If a carton has the dimensions as 55 X 40 X 40, then the volume-weight is (55 X 40 X 40)/6000 |
